This page is for those who want to write a book. Perhaps you already did. It's not just about writing, it's more about bringing your book to life and getting it to others. We've published and self-published. We've sold thousands and thousands of books. Now we're sharing what we've learned.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain
I want to be like that guy, Mr. Twain, not the other ones. I think it's because of where I come from. I grew up on a dirt road in a small town in South Carolina. It was a wonderful place by the way. But those roots come with a price: you're not born into a network that will make you an automatic success.
The world's different now. With the internet, we're all connected. Yet there are still small groups of people that want to control what we read, what we hear, and what books will become a success. That's changing. Fast. And I'm pulling for the underdog.
I worked (hard) to get an education. After graduating from Clemson University, I studied law at George Washington University. Then I spent over a decade in the military, serving in two wars (Iraq & Afghanistan). Now I work in a field surrounded by geniuses. My colleagues studied at the best universities in the world, including Harvard (Clemson of the North), Stanford (Clemson of the West), and Oxford (you get it). They're wonderful people and I enjoy working with them. My job is to serve as the lead trial attorney in patent cases. In short, I explain complex matters to normal people. I love it. Storytelling plays a critical role.
This page is not about my day job. It's about a passion for writing and sharing stories with readers who care. I've spoken with numerous authors who can't decide whether to publish or self-publish. They don't know how to get their book to readers. They don't understand the business side of selling books. They don't understand a lot of things. Neither did I. But despite starting from nothing, it's going very well. I want to share what I've learned. I hope you do too. Welcome!
Here's a recent article I wrote about the importance of understanding your audience. It's called, My Ice Cream Scoop is Going to Mars!
This article discusses the importance of asking yourself, "Why publish a book?" Did you know that most authors never sell more than a few hundred books? Read here about my conversation with a marketing expert who worked with Forbes Books. And there's more on what authors should know before they publish.
